COLLOQUIUM: W7-X Status Report
The world's most advanced stellarator, Wendelstein 7-X, located in Greifswald, Germany, is rapidly approaching first plasma operation. Its purpose is to demonstrate the fusion reactor relevance of the optimized stellarator. The experiment is built for steady-state operation, featuring 70 superconducting coils, up to 10 MW of steady-state ECRH heating, and actively cooled plasma facing components. The full operational magnetic field strength of 2.5 T has been reached, and the required topology - nested magnetic flux surfaces - has been verified. Having achieved an adequate vacuum quality and having tested the ECRH heating system, the device is now technically ready for first plasma operation, and is awaiting the operation permit from the German authorities. Until then, the first scientific results of the device have already been obtained, without plasma operation: The confirmation of the existence of nested, closed magnetic flux surfaces, including verification of the expected magnetic island chains.The data obtained so far agree with expectations and provide a first confirmation of the accuracy of the coil geometry and assembly, as well as diagnostic installation. First results from error field measurements and compensation thereof will be presented.
