COLLOQUIUM: The Gifts of the Ocean and its Future
Covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean provides humans with a diverse range of benefits. These are collectively known as ecosystem services, which are generated through biological processes in marine ecosystems. Humans receive a variety of other benefits from marine ecosystems, including the provisioning of oxygen and absorption of carbon dioxide and waste decomposition. Islands are hotspots in terms of such benefits. Through shipboard experiments and satellite data analyses in the western subtropical region, we propose a new mechanism for the island mass effect fueled by nitrogen fixation. This talk discusses the recent development of this concept.
