COLLOQUIUM: Development of High Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy at PPPL
This lecture reviews the development of x-ray spectroscopy at PPPL, which began in the 1970’s on the ST (Symmetric Tokamak) and has had a significant impact on the magnetic fusion research program worldwide. Several important physics parameters can be measured with these techniques. After a brief historical review, the main emphasis of the talk will be on recent developments of spatially resolved high resolution x-ray crystal spectroscopy, which enabled measurement of full profiles of ion temperature, electron temperature, and plasma flow velocity on tokamaks using a single instrument, and present developments toward application of PPPL x-ray technology to high energy density physics experiments such as the TITAN laser facility at LLNL, OMEGA and OMEGA EP at the University of Rochester, the National Ignition Facility, the Sandia Z facility, and the matter under extreme conditions (MEC) end station at the linac coherent light source (LCLS) at Stanford University’s SLAC.
